“Anxiety in teens is higher than it's ever been. Because these kids are having to perform at a standard that is a generalized standard that they don't necessarily fit into and it does make sense because when we remove God's design and plan, we end up with these things like depression. Because the Bible tells us that the joy of the Lord is my strength. And so when I'm sent into a place every day where, well, God is there but where I'm not allowed to be taught about God or speak of God or see God or do things God's way, then it's not going to be a joy-filled place. When you remove the Lord from the school, you're also removing joy and strength.” – Aby Rinella

If you didn't already listen to the first part of this conversation, listen to it here.

Aby Rinella is back with me today and we are talking about the benefits of homeschooling. We talked before about “The Why of Homeschooling” and today we’re building on some of those ideas. We recorded that episode several months ago, but this is the second part of that conversation about the many, many benefits of being able to keep our kids at home and disciple them.

The Bible passage that we have parked on for this episode is Matthew 6:31-33, but really focusing on verse 33. But it starts out, "Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' for the Gentiles seek after these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Several months ago, Aby and Yvette had a great conversation in which they talked about the "Why of Homeschooling" and it's possibly our most popular episode. Aby and Yvette did another two episodes with Karen DeBeus on "The Who, Why, and How of Homeschooling", which have also been a beloved resource for homeschool families.

"I think in the beginning, I would look at other kids who parents would talk about the struggles that they had with their children but also the blessings of it too. But I thought, well... Homeschooling's going to be different in our house. It's going to run smoothly. And as I had this fairytale in my mind of what it was going to look like, we were going to just have this perfectly scheduled-out day. My children were going to just sit so compliantly in their desks and they were going to just do the work that I asked them to do. And they were going to learn everything the first time and they were not going to argue with me. I mean, I had this idea of how it was going to unfold and then I started homeschooling!"

“God’s way is best. God has a best design. When God designed us to be parents and he laid out in his word as to what it means to be parents, he gave us directions to go with that, that would guide us to be the best parents we can be. He does that with everything. How can you best manage money? How can you best be married? How can you best even run a business and a government? It’s everything that we need for life and godliness is in his word. And so with that is also how can we best raise our children? And the Bible is very clear that to best raise our children to serve and honor and worship him is to do it according to his word in everything that we do all day long.” – Aby Rinella

Aby and Yvette did another two episodes with Karen DeBeus on "The Who, Why, and How of Homeschooling", which have also been a beloved resource for homeschool families.

On this one we want to take that a little bit further and we want to talk about the blessings and the benefits of homeschooling. So once people know and understand what their why is, we want to talk about the great joy and blessings that come from it. And the verse that Aby and I have been talking about a lot is Matthew 6:33, and for our family this has become a verse that has been very instrumental to us in this amazing journey that God has had us on with filming the documentary, and even just with life, with homeschooling, with trying to figure out this whole parenting thing. And so I'm going to read this verse to you again. Many of you already know it, but we're going to start out with it.

Matthew 6:31-33 "Therefore, do not be anxious saying, what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear, for the Gentiles seek after all these things and your heavenly father knows that you need them all. “You talked about math. Where do these invisible laws of mathematics come from and why don't they randomly change? They come from the mind of God, and they don't change because God doesn't change. Laws of nature. The whole reason we can do science to begin with is we have laws of nature that are, they're not tangible, but they don't change. They're consistent every time and that's why you can do an experiment today and tomorrow and get the same results if you do it the same way. Well that's only possible because God made not only the tangible world, but the non-tangible world. He made the laws of nature. He holds them together so they don't randomly change. They reflect Him. And so the only reason you can do science to begin with is because God is real and the Bible's true. And you can point out all of that when you're teaching it from a Biblical perspective.” – Bryan Osborne, Answers in Genesis

 Schoolhouse Rocked Production Update

Bryan Osborne is a well-respected speaker, author, and curriculum specialist for Answers in Genesis. He holds a master’s degree in education and taught Bible history in a public school for 13 years. He has been teaching Christians to defend their faith for nearly 20 years. We had the privilege of interviewing Bryan for Schoolhouse Rocked, at the Creation Museum, and that interview was one that dramatically shaped the direction of the rest of the film. We can’t wait for you to see his contribution when the film is released, but in the meantime we were able to interview him for The Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast and we know you will be encouraged by his insights into education, Biblical worldview, and discipleship.

“Dear Christian, please recognize that God’s Word is being attacked at a foundational level, and that’s why so many of your kids and grandkids are walking away from the faith. We’ve got to give them the right foundation, which is based on the idea that the truth that God’s Word is the absolute authority, and all things will go from there.” – Bryan Osborne

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that WE ARE DONE FILMING for Schoolhouse Rocked!!

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In order to complete this film with excellence, we need the help of the homeschooling community… we need YOU! The post-production budget for the film is $198,157. The majority of that budget still needs to be funded, so we are asking you to pledge monthly for the next 12 months to help us reach this goal. As a community we can finish this movie! Will you please join us?

Schoolhouse Rocked is not our movie. It’s a project by and for the homeschool community, and it’s all for God’s glory. We are confident that He will use this important resource to grow the homeschooling community and impact families around the world. However, if we are not able to raise the necessary funds to get through post-production, all progress on the movie will stop.

Here’s how YOU can help..

1} PRAY! Pray for the Lord’s continued protection over our family, wisdom as we move forward, and for Schoolhouse Rocked to be fully funded. Pray also that this film will have a huge impact in God’s kingdom. Our greatest desire is not to simply make a movie about homeschooling, but to impact families and culture for Christ.

2} PLEDGE MONTHLY for the next 12 months. Any amount helps and it adds up quickly. Whether you can afford $10/month or $100/month or more, it’s all the same in God’s economy and will be a huge step towards finishing the movie and getting it into theaters.

We need the support of the homeschool community, sponsors, and donors both big and small.

There is a real need to pull together as a community and support the important ministry of Schoolhouse Rocked!

 Schoolhouse Rocked Production Update

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that WE ARE DONE FILMING!!

On June 8, we ventured off on a 10 day trip across the country to meet up with Heidi St. John, her family, and their team at the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center in Vancouver, Washington.

Our time there was incredibly successful as we finished filming the rest of Schoolhouse Rocked with Heidi and her crew. Though we had already filmed the majority of the interviews for the movie, we still needed to film a narrative that would weave throughout the film. Together, Heidi and I were able to tell that story and it couldn’t have gone better. If you’ve ever heard Heidi speak, or listened to her podcast, you know that she is passionate about the Gospel and homeschooling, and is an excellent communicator. She was God’s perfect provision for this very important part of the movie.

After filming in Washington, we headed south to California to spend some much needed time with family and friends. Ginger Hubbard is an encouragement to me and thousands of other homeschool moms as she speaks at conventions all across the country on the topic of biblical parenting. She is the author of several books including Don’t Make Me Count to Three, Wise Words for Moms, and I Can't Believe You Just Said That!

Ginger Hubbard on Biblical Parenting

"Imagine trying to teach your child how to tie his shoes without the practice principle. Just verbally walking him through the process is not going to be enough. At some point, you would have to physically demonstrate how to do it, and then not only that, but require him to practice it on his own. And so, the way that I look at it is if the practice principal is vital for teaching such a morally neutral task as tying shoes, how much more important is it for training children in Christ-like character?" - Ginger Hubbard

“I became passionate about this topic because my daughter was taking some leadership training classes to help prepare herself for working at our local Bible camp, and the conversation turned to how she would be less equipped to work with some of these kids because she was homeschooled. She came home really bothered about that, and at the same time actually, our youth pastor made the comment about the kids needing to be the salt and the light in the public school system, and how that's one reason he had never homeschooled is because he wanted his kids to be the salt and the light... She felt like she wasn't doing what God wanted her to do because she was homeschooled instead of being in the public school system.” - Misty Bailey

In this episode, Yvette Hampton and Misty Bailey discuss whether our kids have the responsibility of being "salt and light" in public schools. Are we missing an opportunity to evangelize when we remove our kids from public schools, and if they do not have the responsibility of being "salt and light" there, who does? Finally, we discuss how, when, and where our kids should be "salt and light", and how we can prepare them.

Crystal Twibell is a homeschool mom of 8 and author of 7 P’s in a Pod: A Purposeful System for Home Schooling Success. She is the owner of a consulting business that specializes in event planning and organizational systems and has worked in the homeschooling community for over 30 years. She has enjoyed homeschooling her eight children for the last 23 years. Transplanted from city life, she and her husband, John, along with their four youngest children, live in rural Georgia and appreciate the quiet sounds of the woods, mixed with the shouts and laughs of her children. A cup of coffee on the front porch and twinkling fireflies at dusk are as much a part of life as the occasional clogged toilet and burned breakfast.

7 P’s in a Pod provides encouragement to homeschool parents through laying out a formatted outline with the tools you need to plan a full, meaningful year of school that allows you to focus on the needs of each individual child. 7 P’s in a Pod is not a cookie-cutter approach; it outlines basic guidelines that, if followed, can result in lasting success for the entire family. The simple text and customizable charts can assist you in purposefully planning your homeschool year.
