Schoolhouse Rocked: The Homeschool Revolution

2020-09

Episodes

Wednesday Sep 30, 2020

Join Yvette Hampton for the second part of her conversation with Heather Haupt, homeschool mom to five blessings, author, speaker, and former homeschooled student.
No question about it, it’s a Brave New World out there. The world is changing at a breakneck speed. And, what’s a parent to do?
Do you feel like you’re living in a dystopian novel right now? What in the world is going on in the culture, pre-2020 and especially now? And, what can we be doing as parents to prepare our children for whatever the future holds? Join us for this encouraging discussion on how we can resist the urge to panic, parent intentionally, set a firm foundation for our kids, and prepare our family to stand strong in a world that seems to be fighting against all things true and good.

Heather Haupt is an author and speaker who was homeschooled and is now homeschooling her five children. Recognizing the brevity of childhood and the power of a parent’s influence, Heather both inspires and equips families toward intentional parenting, pursuing God, and delighting in the adventure of learning. She is the author of the books Knights in Training: Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous and Compassionate Boys, The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks, and co-author of GO GLOBAL: A Literature-Heavy, Movement-Rich Learning Adventure. She writes at CultivatedLearning.org and HeatherHaupt.com.
Scripture Mentioned:
“But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” 2 Corinthians 10:2-6 KJV
Psalm 1 “Blessed is the manwho walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.”

"Cease endlessly striving for what you want to do and learn to love what must be done." | Goethe
Yvette Hampton talks with Lara Molettiere, homeschool mom, author, blogger, and speaker about how to make your home a sacred space to cultivate strong roots and build relationships with your family.
This is a beautiful part of mother culture and we, as women, are blessed with the ability to be grace-makers and gatekeepers in a world that puts too much, too soon on our loved ones.
In our culture of busyness, making the choice to bravely go against the constant pull of the seemingly urgent things and choose instead the slower, intentional life that focuses only on the important is valiant.

Rachael Carman is not only a respected author but is also a sought-after speaker. She has been a speaker in over thirty states and seven countries.
She has been married to her husband, Davis, since 1986. They have seven kids with whom they love to laugh. Together, their life has been a roller-coaster ride, with God at the controls. Rachael enjoys playing in the dirt, eating dark chocolate, and walking on the beach. She and Davis are the owners of Apologia Educational Ministries.

Scripture References:
Galatians 5:22-23 – The Fruit of the Spirit
Proverbs 31:10 “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.”

Practical tips for building Christ-like character:
Pray that God will show you what needs your attention not only in your children, but also in yourself. Pray that God will be glorified and that you and your children will grow more into the image of His Son Jesus. Pray that He will grant you opportunities to weave in C3 through each day, to give you eyes to see.
Assess character quality strengths and weaknesses for yourself and your children; don’t forget that the enemy is never satisfied with our weaknesses; he also wants to steal our strengths for his purposes. Be honest, but not brutal. Look for character strengths and acknowledge weaknesses. Don’t overwhelm yourself or your kids with too much to work on. This is a journey.
Begin-this is the hardest part, just starting. So, begin slowly always using Scripture and prayer as a guide; this is a process, not an insta-fix. It will take time. Know that this is the training that God blesses because it is heart training. There will be times when you falter. Those are times when you need to simply begin again, anew.
Dig your heels in, dare to be intentional, dare to deal with the most important issues of the heart by engaging in the battle. Dare to practice prayerful perseverance. Dare to work on your own heart as you seek to train your child’s heart. Dare trust God’s way as you focus on foundational issues of the heart.
Define the weekly focus character quality and discuss it. Sometimes it’s also helpful to define and discuss its opposite. Look at what God’s word says about the CQ and look for it in the life of the Bible character. Set the bar when it comes to Christ’s example and Bible teaching. Then hold the line when it comes to behavior training with consistency and patience.

Join Yvette Hampton and Aby Rinella for another Q&A episode where they address the following questions:
"The school year has just begun, and I’m already overwhelmed. How can I find a Christian homeschooling mentor that can walk me through and help me step by step?"
"We’re new to homeschooling and I’m very excited but also nervous because I’m not a trained teacher. I’m struggling to understand what homeschool should look like for our family. I assumed it was recreating regular school at home, but now I’m figuring out that it doesn’t work that way. Please help!"
